Supporting Children –Hannah’s Treasure Chest
Hannah’s Treasure Chest is a nonprofit organization that works with social service agencies in Butler, Greene, Montgomery, and Warren Counties with a mission to enrich the lives of children in need. They provide clothing, equipment, diapers, hygiene items, toys, books and other essential items to about 5000 children year.
MVAPI members identified this organization as one that helps the families, specifically the youth of our community in need. We worked with Hannah’s Treasure Chest to identify most needed items including diapers, boys and girl’s socks & underwear and presented a check on March 11, 2020 for $2500.88.
Some opportunities to service their organization include help in sorting out and putting together packages, cleaning donated items, or helping with the holiday times and adopting a family or group of children and coordinating gifts for that group. This could be a good group opportunity for youths given less age restrictions.
Supporting the Veterans
MVAPI members worked with the Voluntary Services at the local Veterans Administration Hospital (VAH) and identified some of the needs of homeless Veterans including blankets, gloves and sweat suits to keep them warm in winter.
One hundred blankets, in collaboration with AAPI under ‘Share -A- Blanket Program’ were handed over to the Voluntary Services in end of 2019. Many of these blankets were distributed to the homeless on January 29th at 2 am during a drive through program in the city of Dayton. Subsequently, 100 pairs of gloves and sweat suits were presented on February 3, 2020. The total cost of items presented was $ 3583.20.
VAH offers several volunteer opportunities for kids and adults. There are 4-6 weeks summer internships for high school kids, which the kids can avail.
